Inner Strength: Thoughts from BAC Graduate, Gavin McArthur
Gavin McArthur was one of our Bower Adventure Course (BAC) participants in the summer of 2018. As a result of this life-changing Peak 7 experience, Gavin discovered an inner strength that was given to him by God. All of the experiences that this 2018 BAC class faced; the joys, hardships, laughter and tears, all work to enable each participant to discover who God has created them to be.
“During my 50 day Leadership course, we had to cross a two-mile wide boulder field. My backpack weighed more than half my body at the time. My ribs were aching, and I could barely breathe. I would climb up a boulder, and keep going. I was in tears, and a sudden realization came to me: if I just sat there and cried, what would be the lesson learned? So I got back up, pushing back the pain, and kept going, with a mentality that I had to go 10 more steps, then another 10, and keep going till I reached the end. Every time I fell, I pushed back, got up, and kept marching on. My inner strength had shown me for the first time ever, that pain was ok, it was ok to admit that I was weak. It was in these moments that I also understood that one of my biggest mistakes, possibly my greatest mistake, was not realizing how internally strong I was until that point. Inner strength is something that cannot be taught by anyone, or anything. It is always there inside of you, ready to be called into action. I learned that it is ok to admit when I was in pain and when I needed help. Sometimes the greatest lessons we learn are from those around us, ready to help.” – Gavin McArthur, 2018 Bower Adventure Course Graduate
