Bower Adventure Course Young Women Leading the Way
“A leader … is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.” – Nelson Mandela
Right now, all across Washington and Oregon, hundreds of youth are exploring creation and discovering their massive and unique inherent value. This summer Peak 7 has groups rafting the Wenatchee and Deschutes, paddle-boarding Lake Washington, climbing at Smith Rock and Vantage, backpacking in the Olympics and North Cascades, summiting Baker and El Dorado, and so much more!
I had the honor of joining our brand new Young Women’s Bower Adventure Course (BAC) group for their trek up El Dorado peak, in the North Cascades. The BAC is our 54-day intensive leadership adventure course. Even in the few days I was with them, these young women grew incredibly in their leadership! When I joined them, they were 30 days into their course and showing tremendous signs of servant leadership and personal growth.
When we first hit the trailhead, I thought I would see these young women demonstrate leadership in the form of forging through rough trails, talus fields, up steep glaciers – all the way to the top. And they were strong as they navigated this challenging trip. But I was surprised to discover that their leadership actually came in the form of shepherding one another. At various points during this beautiful and very arduous trip, each young woman stepped up and served their fellow sister. The many images of these participants looking out for each other will forever be imprinted on my mind. Their two sacrificial guides, Kelley and Juliana set the tone in this shepherding leadership style and the girls copied them.
To say I was very encouraged by this trip is an incredible understatement. I was with the group for a mere three days and can only imagine how great an impact this summer has been for both the participants and guides. I am floored by the transformation of young lives all across the great PNW. Transformation made possible by incredible Peak 7 guides and the Peak 7 community who sees the value not only in these trips, but, more importantly, in these kids. And we’re just getting started.
